Stowhill Estates & Keller Williams are really proud to offer a wonderful family home in the heart of an enchanting Oxfordshire village
Nestled down a private driveway in the heart of the picturesque village of Childrey, George House is a warm and welcoming family home which we think is perfect for the discerning house-hunter looking for the countryside dream.
From the moment you enter George House through the solid oak door and into the flagstone hallway, you’ll feel at home. The house has been lovingly renovated and extended and has been beautifully decorated by the current owners, who have retained the traditional style of the building but added modern essentials such as discreet solar panels and underfloor heating downstairs. The reception rooms feel like a boutique hotel, and the five generously sized bedrooms are straight out of the pages of Country Living.
Downstairs is the perfect balance of open plan family living with more formal rooms and private spaces, and upstairs the generous sized bedrooms careful layout create a comfortable family lifestyle.
From the hand-made kitchen with an Everhot range, the solid oak flooring and exquisite decorative touches inside, every detail about George House has been carefully and tastefully executed. Plus its location in one of Oxfordshire’s best villages means it ticks all the boxes for an idyllic country lifestyle.
We know that George House will simply delight you and we can’t wait to show you around.
Approach George House through a five-bar gate and up a sweeping gravel driveway. Open the oak front door into a pretty porch with flagstone floors, which then leads you into the enormous sitting room. With enough room for three large sofas and a grand piano, this room is filled with light thanks to windows on three sides and two sets of French doors leading onto the garden and terrace. This is a fantastic room in summer when you can throw open the doors for a BBQ and wander in and out with a glass of wine in your hand, and a cosy space to chill out in the winter in front of the crackling Clearview log fire. The current owners tell us that Christmas is absolutely magical in this room – there’s enough space for a huge tree and it’s just perfect for large family gatherings.
From the formal sitting room, the space flows through into the beautiful farmhouse style kitchen, warmed by the Everhot range and with a large central island where everyone naturally congregates. You can enjoy a casual supper sitting up on the bar stools here, or a more formal meal entertaining your guests at the huge wooden farmhouse table in the spacious dining area just off the kitchen. The hand-built shaker-style kitchen units are complemented by a mixture of granite and wooden work surfaces and a traditional butler’s sink. Yet another set of French doors allows in plenty of light and gives access to the terrace outside where you can dine on a summer’s evening.
Just off the dining area is the cosy snug, where you can curl up together to watch TV, read a book in peace and quiet or spend family time together.
Across a small inner hallway/boot room is the home office, perfectly situated far enough away from the main hustle and bustle when you need to concentrate, but close enough so you’ll still feel part of the home. Adjacent to the kitchen is the utility room which can accommodate dogs and usefully has its own outside door which will save your clean kitchen floors! There’s enough space in here for all your washing/drying appliances, an extra freezer or the essential wine fridge.
The oak staircase, situated in the centre of the home, is one of the most striking features of George House, and walking up it you’ll find a spacious landing with five fantastic bedrooms leading off it.
The master bedroom is a spacious and peaceful sanctuary, with triple aspect windows, acres of built-in wardrobe space and a stunning en-suite bathroom with his and hers Fired Earth sinks, walk-in shower and roll top bath where you can enjoy a long soak on a winter’s evening.
The second bedroom is equally gorgeous. It’s bigger and brighter than you would expect and like all the other rooms in George House, has been furnished exquisitely. With a chic en-suite with walk-in shower and large dressing area, this is a guest room your visitors may not want to leave!
Upstairs there are three further bedrooms, situated next to each other at the opposite ends of the landing, making them perfect spaces for children as you’re far enough away from the toys and noise! There is easy access to masses of storage in the loft through a clever door off the landing which opens onto a set of steps, so there’s no fussing around with loft ladders. A bright and sunny family bathroom with two Velux windows completes the upstairs.
Outside and Gardens
George House has an exceptionally generous garden for a village property. The garden wraps around the building, giving access to sunlight at all times of the day, and providing distinct spaces: a great lawn area to the front of the house for playing, a lovely terrace just off the kitchen and sitting room for dining and entertaining, plus plenty of space for a vegetable patch if that’s your thing. There’s also a detached garage with a doorway into the main house.
The village of Childrey is probably one of the best-kept secrets in this part of Oxfordshire. A quintessential English village, with stunning country views, a picturesque duck pond, beautiful Church, highly regarded primary school and fantastic deli/coffee shop, it’s no wonder many people who move here never want to leave! There are some fantastic pubs nearby including The Greyhound in Letcombe and The Star at Sparsholt which is a short stroll away.
Childrey offers peaceful country living and a thriving village community but is just 3 miles from Wantage with its shops and amenities including a Waitrose, Costa Coffee, restaurants, parks and leisure centre. Wantage is a thriving market town that has recently been identified by The Sunday Times as a great place to live. Childrey also offers easy access to Oxford, Swindon and Newbury, and trains to London from nearby Didcot Parkway (11 miles). It’s very welcoming village with social functions throughout the year organised by the church, school and local community. There are fabulous pubs in the neighbouring villages of Sparsholt and Letcombe Regis, both within walking distance through beautiful countryside.
The Ridgeway CE Primary School in the village has a great reputation and King Alfred’s Academy in Wantage has an Outstanding Ofsted rating. There is a joint bus service from the village to Abingdon Boys School, The School of St Helen and St Katherine, and The Manor Preparatory School. Other local independent schools nearby include Cokethorpe, Radley, Our Lady’s, St Hugh’s, Pinewood and Cranford House.
